The Two Sides of Women’s Power in South Asia
Women in South Asian countries like Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka are doing amazing things today. We see them working as brave pilots, brilliant doctors, skilled engineers, and smart scientists. Yet, as a teacher looking at our society, I see a big problem. While some women fly high, many others are left behind. At the same time, our children are losing good manners and patience.
To make a better future, we must look at how women live today and find a way to balance work with a loving home.
The Three Worlds of South Asian Women
If we look closely at our towns and cities, we can see three different groups of women:
- The Rich Class: These women have money and good education. They run big businesses and have a strong voice in politics.
- The Middle Class: These women fight a hard battle every day. They try to get a college degree, build their confidence, and stand on their own feet.
- The Poor Class: This is the saddest part. Poor women are mostly ignored by the government and society. They work very hard in fields or homes but get no help.
Real Stories from India and Pakistan
Let us look at real examples to see how women live.
In India, middle-class women are doing great things together. A famous business named Lijjat Papad started with just seven poor women who borrowed 80 rupees. Today, it helps over 45,000 women earn money from their own homes. Also, big tech cities like Bengaluru have thousands of women working as software engineers.
In Pakistan, we see both hope and pain. Women in Lahore started the Pink Rickshaw project to drive their own three-wheel cars. This helps them earn money safely. But in rural areas of Sindh, or the poor slums of Mumbai, women work all day under the burning sun. According to data from the World Bank, only about 24% of women in Pakistan and 32% in India are part of the official working world. The rest are often ignored and have very hard lives.
The Missing Foundation in Our Homes
As more women leave the house for jobs, a very important duty is getting lost. That duty is raising good children. In the past, mothers spent a lot of time teaching children how to be polite, patient, and kind. Today, because parents are too busy, many kids are growing up with bad manners and a quick temper.
The Danger of Too Much Freedom
In rich families, this problem is different. Parents give their children too much money and total freedom. They do not teach them what is right and what is wrong. These teenagers feel they can do whatever they want.
Progressive Western countries are different. They teach their children to respect public rules and civic duties from a very young age. Our South Asian societies are falling behind because we are failing to teach these simple, important values at home.
How Fathers Can Help at Home
Raising a good generation is not a job for the mother alone. A home becomes a happy place only when the father steps up to help. Here are how fathers can bring balance:
- Share the Chores: Fathers should help with daily work like washing dishes, cleaning the house, or cooking.
- Talk to the Kids: Fathers must spend real time with their children, listening to their problems and teaching them right from wrong.
- Show Respect: When a father treats the mother with respect, sons learn how to treat women nicely, and daughters feel safe and valued.
- Reduce the Stress: A good husband listens to his wife and shares her worries so she does not feel alone.
Simple Solutions to Fix Our Society
As your teacher and guide, I believe we must build a world where women can grow without losing their families. Here are four steps we need to take:
1. Better Schools
Schools must teach more than just math and science. They must teach kids how to be kind and honest. The government must also build free skill schools for poor women so they can learn sewing or computer work to feed their families.
2. Free Healthcare
A healthy society needs healthy mothers. We need free medical clinics in every village. Women also face a lot of stress from balancing work and home, so they need mental health support.
3. Safe Parks and Outdoor Spaces
Many parks and markets in South Asia are not safe or comfortable for women. We should build women-only parks and sports clubs. When mothers and children have a safe place to play and exercise, their health gets much better.
4. Safe Travel and Work
We must protect the dignity of women. This means making buses and trains safe, punishing bad behavior, and giving mothers flexible hours at work. If a mother knows she is safe, she can do her job well and still care for her home.
The Best Solution: Beautiful Lessons from Islam
To make our society successful and full of peace, we can use the beautiful teachings of Islam. These rules give a perfect guide for a happy life:
- Respect for Mothers: Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that Paradise lies under the feet of your mother. If we remember this, no one will ever disrespect a woman.
- The Prophet’s Example: The Prophet used to repair his own shoes, sew his clothes, and help his wives with housework. This shows every father that helping at home is a sign of a great man.
- Education for All: Islam says that seeking knowledge is a duty for every male and female. Giving girls a good education is a religious duty.
- Helping the Poor (Zakat): Islam commands rich people to give a part of their wealth to the poor every year. If we do this honestly, rich people can lift poor women out of poverty.
- Kindness at Home: The Quran tells men to live with their wives in a kind and fair way. Following this rule creates a safe and loving home for everyone.
By combining modern jobs with these beautiful moral values, we can make South Asia a wonderful place to live for everyone.
